Taking Care Report and Projects

From research to action

Improving mental health and well-being in Canadian journalism

Researchers Dave Seglins (CBC News) and Matthew Pearson (Carleton University) released the Taking Care report on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 2022.

RESEARCH

The Taking Care Report followed a survey of 1200 Canadian media workers which in May 2022 documented high rates of stress, anxiety and trauma exposure on the job. Findings and recommendations are also available in French .

ACTION

In response, Canadian news leaders held a Taking Care Roundtable Summit in Ottawa in late 2022 to hear from global experts and to identify key issues affecting mental health in the news industry. Their two days of workshops, strategy and action plans are captured more fully here: Taking Care Roundtable - What We Heard Report. (A French version will be available soon.)

WORKING GROUPS - GET INVOLVED

We are launching new industry ‘working groups’ to tackle five key priorities:

  • newsroom trauma protocols and practices

  • inclusion & well-being

  • peer support

  • freelance, temp work, and job vulnerability

  • training curriculum for newsrooms and j-schools
